Irradiation is a physical treatment of food with high-energy, ionising radiation. It can be used to prolong the shelf life of food products and/or to reduce health hazards associated with certain products due to the presence of pathogenic micro-organisms.
The list of products authorised for irradiation within the whole EU contains only a single food category: "dried aromatic herbs, spices and vegetable seasonings".
So far, there have been 2 irradiation facilities in Thailand approved by the EU since 2007; Thai Irradiation Center (Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology) and ISOTRON (Thailand) Ltd.
