Update on the E.Coli outbreak in the EU

The European Commission has been actively and closely following up the outbreak of Shiga-Toxin Producing Escherichia Coli (STEC) in Germany since it became known on 22 May.

Once the outbreak was confirmed, the Commission has activated all existing networks (public health and food safety) created to manage the incidents. This includes the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) and the Early Warning and Response System (EWRS) ensuring rapid distribution throughout the EU on findings in, and distribution of, possible food sources, and human cases respectively.

At the moment, the investigations are still on-going to confirm the exact contamination sources.

Updated information regarding the incident can be found in the website of DG for Health and Consumers (SANCO) at: http://ec.europa.eu/food/food/coli_outbreak_germany_en.htm.
