Animal By-Products

Animal by-products (ABPs) are the parts of a slaughtered animal that are not directly consumed by humans, including dead on farm animals and catering waste (i.e. waste food originating from restaurants, catering facilities and kitchens) that contains or has been in contact with meat products, whether cooked or uncooked.

Geographical Indications

Geographical Indications (GIs) are a type of intellectual property. They are forms of identification which identify a product as originating in a region or locality in a particular country.

Animal Feed

This section dedicates to EU rules and regulations on animal feeds including feed hygiene, feed labelling, feed additives, approved list of establishments and undisirable substances.

Organic farming

The European Commission adopted Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 on organic production, which aims to improve clarity for both consumers and farmers.

Animal welfare

The EU has put high importance on animal welfare. There are animal welfare legislations on farm, during transportation and at slaughter houses.

GMOs

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Genetically Modified Micro-organisms (GMMs) can be defined as organisms (and micro-organisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural recombination.

Wood packaging

The EU requirements for wood packaging material and dunnage are based on the 2002 FAO International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) no. 15. Directive 2004/102/EC, which entered into force on 1 March 2005, requires the following measures to be taken for wood packaging material and dunnage entering the EU from all third countries (except Switzerland):


Imports of live animal

The EU has laid down a wide range of animal health requirements to avoid the transmission of diseases from trade and imports of live animals to either the public or other animals. For imports of live animals, additional animal health requirements are set out in specific Commission Decisions.

Imports of plant products

 Unlike imports of animal-origin products, imports of plants and plant products into the EU market do not require positive list of eligible countries and approved establishment list. Therefore, it is important that exporters from third countries understand relevant EU requirements:
